When the going gets cold, the moisture gets going – and we all dash to the beauty counters for the latest hydrating masks, creams and more.
But, hey, if you can make your own healthy meals from scratch, what’s stopping you whipping up your own antioxidant-rich, skin-soothing beauty concoctions? Sure, it takes a bit of time and effort, but the pay-off is completley natural, fresh skincare, minus any chemical nasties.
‘Making your own products allows you to tailor the ingredients so you know exactly what’s going in there. This means you can opt for 100 per cent natural kitchen cupboard ingrediants!’ explains Janey Lee Grace, media coach, author and broadcaster. ‘You can avoid anything that you are allergic or intolerant to, and you can make small batches of exactly what you need.’
Plus, making your own beauty products from ingredients that are good enough to eat will give your liver a break from processing the chemicals and preservatives in the over-the-counter stuff. So this winter, do yourself a favour: dig out your apron and your wooden spoon and cook up these delicious skin trears.
Sea salt scrub
λ 2tbsp sea salt
λ 2tbsp almond oil
λ 1tsp lemon juice
λ 1tsp honey
Mix the ingredients together and gently rub on skin to exfoliate. Leave on for five to 10 minutes then rinse off with warm water.
WF top tip: Add a drop of peppermint oil to invigorate tired skin
Chocolate face mask
Slather on this indulgent mask and enjoy the anti-ageing benefits of chocolate, minus the calories.
λ 2tbsp raw organic cocoa powder
λ 1tbsp honey
λ 1tbsp yoghurt
λ 3tsp fine oatmeal
Blend together the ingredients, apply to your face avoiding your eyes, and leave on for 20 minutes.
Rinse off with warm water.
WF top tip: Throw in a couple of strawberries for an extra hit of antioxidants
Avocado hair conditioner
Avocado is packed with vitamin E and good, monounsaturated fats to moisturise your scalp and add shine.
λ ½ avocado
λ 1tsp jojoba oil
λ 1 egg yolk
Mash the avocado with the jojoba oil. Add the egg yolk and blend in a high-speed blender. Apply to hair and leave for a few minutes. Rinse.
WF top tip : Add a couple of drops of rosemary oil to soothe and treat the scalp
Coconut butter lip balm
This nourishing lip balm contains antibacterial and super-moisturising properties to fend off winter dryness.
λ 1tbsp coconut butter
λ 1 drop pure essential peppermint oil
Melt the coconut butter in a bowl over hot water. Stir in a tiny amount of honey. Add one drop of pure essential peppermint oil.
Pour mixture into a clean 15ml pot, leave to cool and place in the fridge to set.
WF top tip: You can replace coconut butter with olive oil if you prefer
